This crystalline form of aluminium oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) is known for its hardness, ranking just below diamond on the Mohs scale as one of the hardest known materials. It is obtained by the process of high temperature melting of aluminium oxide and its subsequent recrystallization.
Thanks to this, as well as its high thermal stability, corundum is suitable for the production of abrasive materials and tools for grinding and cutting, but more than that, corundum is used in advanced technologies for the production of semiconductors, lasers, high-resistance glass for watches and electronic devices, jewellery etc.
Areas of application
Raw materials for abrasives and polishing products, production of whetstone and honing whetstone ceramic industry, alumina ceramic membranes, alumina foam ceramics, semiconductor industry, production of hard alloys, casting industry, composite materials, etc.
